The Language Of Leotards: A Guide To Choosing Gymnastic Leotards

Jacey Martin

If your child is new to gymnastics, it is a common misconception to think all leotards are the same. However, when you go shopping for gymnastic leotards, you may be surprised by all the choices you have. Knowing a little bit about the various types of leotards will help you choose the ones best for your child.

A good fit matters

Gymnastics requires a lot of flexibility in movement. A leotard that is too snug can be uncomfortable for your child and may cause irritation, which can interfere with learning specific techniques. Likewise, a leotard that is too loose can get in the way of structured movements or lead to embarrassing mishaps if the leotard shifts during gymnastics moves.

Training leotards versus competition leotards

Your child should have two types of leotards when starting gymnastics classes and they each serve a different purpose. A training leotard will fit the shoulders and torso snugly but allow room for your child's growth. A competition leotard is designed to act as a second skin, which makes it easy for judges to see each move precisely when judging gymnast moves during competitions.

Leotard style

Style is typically a matter of preference and will vary between gymnasts. Leotard styles available include racer back, X-back, strappy back, and cross back among others. If your child will be wearing undergarments under the leotard, some styles may not cover undergarments well, so taking that into consideration when choosing a style can help.

Leotard fabrics

Leotards come in a variety of fabrics including nylon, velvet, velour, metallic, and Lycra fabrics. You will want to check with your child's gymnastics studio to see if they have any restrictions before you purchase leotards. Some studios are flexible regarding practice leotards but will likely have restrictions regarding competition leotards.

Some kids enjoy the metallic leotards that come in numerous color choices because they look flashy. Velour may be too hot for some kids, but sequins and other decorations adhere well to them if needed for a competition. Lycra is a popular choice that fits snugly, is durable, and is resistant to scratches.

With all the types of gymnastic leotards, it can be overwhelming when you go shopping for the first time after signing your child up for a gymnastics class. Once you learn a little bit about the basics of gymnastic leotards, you are sure to find the kind that is best for your child's body type.
